Alone on a Wide Wide Sea

When six-year-old orphan Arthur Hobhouse is shipped to Australia after World War Two, he is torn from his sister, his country and everything he has ever known. A long journey lies ahead: a journey of enormous hardships. Taking courage from his friend, fellow orphan Marty, and the extraordinary people he meets along the way, Arthur finally settles down in Australia, discovering a special talent for boat-design and sailing.

Now he has built a special boat for his daughter Allie – a solo yacht designed to carry her to England in search of his long-lost sister. Will the tangled threads of Arthur’s life come together at last?

This is definitely my most favourite book, from anything I have ever read. I don’t think I can even put into words how good it is. The author has written it so well that the emotion really gets to you, especially as there are some happy and sad parts. I would really recommend this to anyone who wants more than a normal read, and it will be staying with me for a long time. I think it is specifically good for readers aged 10 – 14. And it is about a boy – so its not only a girls book!
