The Saga of Larten Crepsley: Birth of a Killer

At the birthplace of the saga, at its end and in its centre, one figure stands firm: Mr Crepsley. Spanning centuries and continents, taking in sea voyages, murder, war and love, this is the epic, blood-soaked tale of the great vampire at the heart of it all. When a young Larten escapes the terrible workhouse in which he toils, he doesn’t know that he is running from an early death into quite another kind of transformation. After meeting the mysterious vampire Seba Nile while sheltering in a crypt, Larten finds himself drawn into the shadowy world of the vampire Clan. Changed beyond recognition, travelling and learning, he enjoys the chance to see a world beyond any he dreamed of in his poverty-stricken youth. But Larten begins to discover something else, too. Much like death, becoming a vampire is something you can’t come back from…

I like Darren Shan books as they are easy to read and easy to imagine, this is a little scary in places and is more for older kids. I liked finding out about Larten.

  • An amazing prequel to Darren Shan’s first saga which stars a vampire called Darren Shan. Birth of a Killer goes two hundred years back in time to the 19th century. This book is about Larten Crepsley. Those of you have read the first saga will recognise him. This story talks about how Larten became a Vampire and his life as a vampire.

I give this book a rating: 7/10 because it a fantastic prequel to his first saga and Darren Shan’s writing skills are excellent.

I recommend this book for ages: 12+ because there are some violent acts in it.
