A Little Princess

Sent to an English boarding school from her home in India, rich Sara Crewe becomes a show pupil – a “little princess”. But when her father dies and his wealth vanishes, Sara’s whole life is turned upside down. Transformed from princess to pauper, she must swap dancing lessons and luxury for drudgery and a room in the attic. Will she find that kindness and generosity are all the riches she truly needs?

A spellbinding classic tale, now featuring a poignant introduction written by Adeline Yen Mah, the bestselling author of Chinese Cinderella.

  • This, my friend, goes on my top 15 books of all time list.

Yes, I know it is odd, but this is one of those books I read when I was very small which has stayed with me for a long time. I haven’t read this book for a while, but I find it such a lovely little read. It is the kind of book that completely and utterly engrosses you in its classical beauty. It feels, to me, 10 times what several children’s authors today could ever be. It is far above the work of Suzanne Collins, Meg Cabot etc etc (Though, of course, every author has merit.)

I suppose the way it has survived time makes it all the more appealing, as well as the fact I read it at quite a young age. Sara could be insipid and dull: but she isn’t at all. She is very real, and though overly sweet, doesn’t pass into the realm of the annoyingly perfect.

Her surroundings are excellent, the storyline charming: everything about The Little Princess is utterly, completely timeless.
