Read this comforting yet intense tale of the not so beautiful Beauty Cookson, who has joined a private school for girls. The story of bullies, friendship and fear is wondrously blended into a page-turning, addictive read by Jacqueline Wilson. This teen fiction book is an ideal story for girls aged 10 and above. Beauty lives a nightmare, being tormented and bullied at her school, and at home she lives in fear of her father’s sudden tantrums and rages. The only comfort she has is her mum and younger children’s programme Rabbit Hutch, where the characters are her friends to whom she can confide in. Her father, a large, fierce man with an extremely short temper has previously been married twice before, until he ended up with Beauty and her young, pretty mum, Dilly. The atmosphere at home is always tense as it is common for her dad to fly into a rage over the smallest things. Her father is disappointed with Beauty’s unattractive looks and lack of confidence and popularity. However, it does not prevent him from continuously trying to turn her into his dream daughter. He is rich and can afford anything his daughter desires, or what he wants her to desire. Things aren’t much better with her parents’ relationships as Beauty’s dad controls her mum and is angry with her most of the time. Shy, timid Beauty is no match for the snooty, pretty confident girls at school. Nicknamed ‘Ugly’ by the girls at school, she struggles through life, friendless and lonely. However, she seems to have finally found a friend at school, Rhona, but is it wise to maintain a friendship with the best friend of Skye, the leader of all the bullies. But, suddenly the tables are turned when Beauty’s dad arranges the ideal birthday for Beauty which she is forced to invite the whole class to, even Skye. In response to this the girls are starting to treat her kindly, little do they know that however mean they are, Beauty will not be able to do anything about it. But suddenly Beauty’s dream birthday evolves into a horrendous nightmare and Beauty and her mum find themselves on the road. Where will they go? As they travel far, a new talent is discovered and the nickname ‘Cookie’ is born. This recipe cooked up by Wilson is a five-star must read for any girl. Read this gripping realistic story and discover all. It’s sensational.
